Art Event - Dance 324 Video Presentations

Today I was able to see different video projects from students. The Students from Dance 324 had to make a video that incorporates dance. Their had to be dancing in the video, and the performers knew that there's a camera in front of their performance. There were many diverse forms of dance and different type of editting techniques. My favorite video was the stop animation video with the transformer dancing on camera. I believe the title was "Sweet Car Commercial". The movement of the transformer action figure was almost 100% in sync with the music.

Through the Lens: Mindy Hoang - "Shadows"

I looked long and hard at this photo. The first thing came to mind was "Wow something like this can be considered art." Then I carefully looked at the pattern that was created with the shadow of the rail. The stairs helped altered the shadows of the rail. Now I feel as I should go out and take pictures of everyday objects to see which image appears like it can be potentially art.

Here is another piece where Black & white played a big role. I believe that the "black & white" look did this photo justice because it adds to the sadness of how this child looks. It makes one wonder what this child gone through and what type of life obstacles she will face in her future. All sorts of questions popped in my mind, "Where and who are her parents?", "Will she live a happy life?", "How long will she live?"

Fazal Sheikh - Vrindavan (Carbon Inkjet print)

This piece captured my attention because it's something, I would consider a landscape photo. The image contains strong diagonal lines. I can tell the artist carefully frame this picture prior to taking the shot. It seems very intense for some reason perhaps because it is in black & white. In my perspective it increases the mystery within and makes me believe there is a deeper meaning involved.

She is a famous vietnamese photographer that collaborates her work with the U.S. military force. An-My is not completely against WAR but she claims that we should all avoid it as much as possible. In my opinion, her work is not considered dark but lean more towards realistic. It seems like her work conveys a degree of truth. For instance, some of her work contains life and death. Particularly this piece..."Trap Rock"

Like many of the South East Asian Immigrants, An-My not only learned or watched about the Vietnam war but she lived and experienced it. The Vietnam War made a lot of people fled to the U.S. in search of a new start and the American Dream. Check out this Documentary...

Carrie Mae Weems Response...

Carrie Mae Weems made her mark in the photographer's realm with her distinct photos of historical images. Weems was told that she was going to get sued, instead of showing fear she told them "yes you should sue me, and we shall have this conversation in court". This tells me a lot about her character. She worked with many different college students to let them reenact historical events, one series in particular are assassinations of famous political figures of the past.

Cindy Sherman is a popular photographer of the late 20th century. She became well known because of the different portraits she created of herself. On the other hand she might be in all of her own photos but she re-created different appearance to portray many other social issues of modern society, especially women's related issue. She did some portraits as different kind of clowns, she did a great job in steering every character away from looking anything like herself. When Sherman portrayed different women of the west coast, she said some of them were offended. I'm sure Sherman did not intend to offend anyone. In my opinion, she's just being blunt with her work. One of my favorite work of her's was the portrait with her dressed as a rich lady and seemed like she was floating on air with a forest type background. It seems simple and strong. Her photo was bold and so was the background. My favorite series was the one where she portrayed many different European women from films to display they're "blank" facial expressions. There were some photos where she wanted it to lean towards the comedy side of things. Such as the one photo where the lady had a big feet but was well dressed. To my surprise Sherman mentioned that, she realized it was easier to use herself compared to when she tried not to be in the photo.

Chris Mayne...

Thanks to Chris Mayne, I learned to appreciate the natural life here in San Diego. He said, a good amount of his content came from what we have here in San Diego. He also mentioned, sometimes you just have to stop and look around. Apparently there’s a lot of extraordinary things around us we just don’t pay much attention to it. What I found most intriguing was when he told us, about what he did to lure hummingbirds to come to his flowers in the backyard. Something that simple can make a big difference if you’re on the hunt to snap that perfect picture of a hummingbird. Another key factor he couldn’t stress enough was patience. Lastly, another one of his suggestions was to sometimes go under or climb over whatever you have to. In order to get that perfect picture.

In my opinion, Richard had a near death experience it probably changed the way he see things. When looking at all the portraits he photographed. I saw more than just a average person standing there. It seemed as if he captured a glimpse of their soul in a way. The details were so clear and to have it in greyscale actually heightened some sort of feeling as you observe each photo. He started in Fashion photography but after going to the hospital for two heart conditions changed him. Enlarging his work also made a big impact for the audience. According to the video shown in class, a man who saw a portrait of himself was shocked and made some bold changes in his life.
